Kitchens are serious business…

November 10th, 2011

and sometimes, just sometimes, they are not.  Enjoy! We have not used these yet…YET.

I offer that kid’s rooms and kitchens are two good rooms where you get to play a little with the space and finishes.  It is important to add a little imagination to these rooms.  Okay, these are not for everyone, or most, but I think we can take our personal spaces too serious.  With some whimsical touches, we can be reminded that life does not always have to be so serious and can be quite fun from time to time.

Old Shoes

November 8th, 2011

Here is  is a recent article that I wrote that first appeared in the Mississippi Business Journal in the Construction Focus in October.   I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to write for them in an effort to try and help bring the large issues and gaps to light that I see in our construction and design industries, and in the planning process here in Mississippi.  I have been trying to offer an easy and familiar connection for people that are new to sustainability to better help them understand what it really means.

Keeping Up With House

The office is about to complete the drawings for potentially the first LEED home here in Jackson.  This is a very exciting prospect for the city.  I am very excited to bring this concept to Jackson.

I have been working with other groups here in town to help them also understand the new exciting world of LEED, but I will save that for a later post.  I have also been working with some city leaders to help Jackson come up with a better more sustainable plan for the city with regards to our future planning efforts.

We need to plan better!  We have to build better!  Code is the low bar of standards!  This is an article I ran across the other day about some promises we are seeing in home energy consumption.

Even if we are seeing some improvements on consumption, what are we to do with all the existing housing stock that we have in place?    Here is a concept that might need some further exploration.  I think it makes sense: Insulation or 401k.

I am looking forward to the promises of tomorrow.

Eat Your Vegetables for a Better Tomorrow and Community

Seabold Architectural Studio is a proud member company of USGBC.  I recently became the first Architect in Mississippi to be a LEED AP Homes.  This is something I am proud of.  My commitment to USGBC is show by the countless hours I volunteer to the USGBC Mississippi Chapter as the Chair of the chapter.  Below is a copy of the recent speech I gave at the Pinnacle Building in Downtown Jackson to many city leaders about some of the answers to our capital city’s problems.  Please help me in supporting USGBC Mississippi’s mission.

What do you think about this as a countertop?

August 19th, 2011

Okay, I admit that I need to use this blog more often.  I have written several articles lately that will hit the newsstand soon.  I promise to keep you updated here as they hit the stand.

I run across a lot of things on the internet that are interesting, and a lot of things that would benefit my clients and other consumers as a whole, if I shared them.  I will try and do better and post these items here as I come across relevant material or an innovative idea that we all could be inspired by.

I get asked my opinion about materials often.  I have plenty of pros and cons on all of them, but this article is a great source of information on a variety of popular countertop materials.

I have used a lot of different countertops materials over the years.  I have been happy with all the choices given the context of each project, but out of all the choices none of them have the flexibility of concrete.  Pictured below is the concrete coffee table we designed for our office that local artisan Andy Hilton built.  When at all possible we will utilize local talent and materials.  It is important to Mississippi!

Studio 2 Concrete built the great coffee table we designed for our meeting space in the office.

The Tyranny of the Mississippi Joke

July 2nd, 2010

A few weeks ago I spent a few days in Snowbird, Utah representing the great state of Mississippi at the USGBC Leadership Retreat, or Leadership Advance as we were taught to call it.  I have to say that I was challenged a great deal there.  It was nice and comfortable being around so many great and talented people that are doing amazing things within the sustainable movement.  I was very sad leaving that safe environment of like minds to come home where the message is not always understood.  Don’t get me wrong; I love this place.  I will repeat it:  I love this place.  I never thought I would think so, but Mississippi is a great state and a great place to be. The Zipper Dilemma

March 30th, 2010

I went on a lunchtime run yesterday.  The older I get, the more important it is, I realize, that taking this time to run is crucial to my development as an architect as well as a person.  Usually I make these runs before the world has woken up at 5 am or earlier.  There are lots of advantages to getting up this early.  I get to see the peaceful city in the dark.  I don’t have to worry about too much traffic.  I get to think about my day and the next few days ahead, and I think clearer on those days.

Some days I just can’t make it up for my early morning run, and I get it in at lunch. Read the rest of this entry »

Taking It to Extremes

sustainable dog houseI love gadgets. I follow several gadget blogs waiting to see what new piece of technology is going to change my life for the better.  But alas, to date, there is no flying car.  I really don’t think many of these items of convenience really change my life too dramatically.
